Garmin has announced the Forerunner 920XT, its most advanced high end GPS watch yet, packing in a huge range of functions into a device 15 per cent lighter and 18 per cent thinner than the previous top of the range model.
The Forerunner 920XT can be used in standard ‘watch-mode’ to monitor daily activity counting steps and calculating calorie burn.
Bluetooth gives the Forerunner 920XT the ability to communicate with your phone and receive notifications such as incoming texts, emails, calls, and calendar reminders.
Waterproof to 50 metres the watch gathers a range of metrics for swimmers including drill logging, recording swim distance, pace, stroke type, stroke count and SWOLF score, as well as giving distance and time alerts.
An altimeter gives ascent and gradient data that cyclists will appreciate, while compatibility with ANT+ power meters such as Vector S and the dual-sensing Vector system give the Forerunner 920XT the data it needs to display power stats including average watts, left/right balance and power zone. When paired with a heart rate monitor, it can derive users’ VO2 max estimates for cycling to help monitor changes in fitness.
Runners can measure a sophisticated range of data including cadence (total steps per minute), vertical oscillation (amount of “bounce” in a runner’s step), and ground contact time, and the colour screen can show a gauge to enable comparison between running peers. There is also a metronome, vibration and audible alerts, a race predictor based on VO2 max for running, and a recovery advisor indicating how long a runner should rest before attempting another hard effort.
There are also special features for ultra-runners, including an UltraTrac mode that turns GPS off at certain intervals, extending its GPS mode battery life from 24 hours to up to 40 hours.
Garmin has built in connectivity to the Virb and Virb Elite action cameras so that you can start and stop the camera, and take still photos directly from the Forerunner 920XT.
The Forerunner 920XT is available in black/blue or red/white for £389.99 or £419.99 for the premium heart rate monitor bundle.
