Fitbit Surge Fitbit Charge Fitbit Charge HR mainFitbit has been quiet in recent months, following the withdrawal of its last wrist worn activity monitor the Fitbit Force because its wristband caused skin irritation and rashes for some users. The company that arguably helped set this category of device alight, was in the doldrums.

Now Fitbit is back with three devices aimed at different types of user – and hopefully with wrist straps that will be comfortable to wear.

The new wrist bands, Fitbit Charge, Fitbit Charge HR and Fitbit Surge are aimed at people with different levels of need and include a range of features not seen before from Fitbit including continuous heart rate monitoring, smartphone integration, touch sensitive screens and GPS.

Fitbit Charge

£99.99, Available from mid November.

The Fitbit Charge has an OLED display showing time of day and real-time stats including distance, calories burned and floors climbed. It monitors sleep quality using motion analysis to understand sleep and wake times, and there is a silent, vibrating wake-up alarm.

Fitbit Charge also vibrates and shows a caller’s name or number when a smartphone is nearby.

The Fitbit Charge is water resistant and has up to 7 days of battery life.

Fitbit Charge HR

£119.99. Available early 2015.

Fitbit Charge HR has all the features of Fitbit Charge plus automatic wrist-based heart rate tracking via LED lights which detect blood volume changes when your heart beats. This means you can get accurate calorie burn for more activities including during exercise and everyday activities like walking, running, biking, lifting weights, spinning, skiing, yoga, Pilates and more.

The Fitbit Charge HR has up to 5 days of battery life.

Fitbit Surge
